>>Have Fun with Risky Business!

The other day I was reading about Passover and the concept of the "narrow place" inside us. Mitzrayim, which means narrow place, was the word for Egypt in Hebrew. The term "narrow place" has deep meaning for me, because it leaves open possibilities for recognizing where we can grow in our lives.

I couldn't stop thinking about this term and what it might mean in terms of our own creativity. A few months ago I wrote about adding adventure to our daily living by doing what we haven't done before. When we take risks, we are often doing what we haven't done before. Why don't we take more of them?

The other night, while playing a game of hearts, I decided to attempt to "shoot the moon." Shooting the moon means a player tries to take all the cards; if you don't take all the cards, you can end up with a lots of points (bad for winning). Well, I ended up winning the hand and getting far ahead in the game all because I took a risk. Perhaps I wouldn't have thought twice about taking a risk in a card game, but I'd just read about the narrow place and Passover and immediately connected this one small action to a larger picture.

As I thought about this idea more, I came up with four questions to help expand the narrow place:

  1. How can I expand the narrow place in my work?
  2. What is gained by expanding the narrow place within me?
  3. Why is expansion and development important to me?
  4. How does taking a risk serve me?

I encourage all of you today to take a risk somehow, somewhere.
