>>Article: Feeling Fear? Walk the Plank!

I am back from scorching hot Florida! We helped my grandmother move boxes into her new house and celebrated her birthday (her 99th!) with her. My husband and I took a day and traveled to several wildlife refuges and drove into the northern part of the Everglades, which is covered with sugar plantations. While hiking through the Pelican Bay NWR, my husband and I happened upon what used to be a stream or river. The mud looked like something a person could sink into and never be heard from again--like quicksand. Needless to say, I didn't want to walk over this former creek on the thin plank that crossed it. I stood back and watched as my husband crossed it and returned. I knew there was no way I would do that. As soon as I get on something that narrow, I feel tottery.

But then...When I felt uncertain about it, I knew I had to do it!! I knew I had to aim past the fear, acknowledge it, and go do it anyway.

I am pleased to say I ended up crossing the plank--mud free.

This situation reminded me how fear often stops us from moving forward--and how pleasurable it is to feel the fear and still move forward.

I say if you have a fear about doing something, then that might be what you are supposed to be doing. A year ago, I was scared to speak in front of 80 people. I immediately stood up and did it and the experience was WONderful. Every time I've done something (that wasn't harmful) I've feared, I've had good experiences.

Of course, fear can be useful as a warning. I would not overcome a fear of jumping off large buildings or running into a fire. I'm not talking about that. I am talking about recognizing when fear isn't serving you so you can DECIDE if you want to let fear stop you from doing what you want in life.

QUESTION:

What does fear stop you from doing?

How does your fear serve you?

Deborah, thank you for the wonderful gift of the creativity cards. I have cut them up and placed them in a pretty antique vase. I draw a new one out every day and do what it says. I may even add Some of my own to the jar. This was a great idea! Thank you! --Liz Shaw, Wings to Soar http://www.sperience.com/
